#FiveOnFriday with PJ MacLayne

May 19, 2017 by Mary

Please welcome P.J. MacLayne here today! She has five really cool facts about her main character, Harmony. I love that name!

The Baron’s Cufflinks is the third book in the Oak Grove Mysteries, and I keep discovering new things about my main character, Harmony Duprie. Until this book, I didn’t realize that she is afraid of flying, and that’s why she drives everywhere. I found out why, too, but you’ll need to read the book to be let in on the secret. That fear might explain her obsession with cars.

Speaking of cars, she named her red Jaguar Dolores, and her Beretta is Betsy. Harmony is also obsessed with names. She has to know everyone’s names. If she doesn’t, and can’t ask, she’ll come up with a numbering system to keep people straight in her head. So Agent 1, Agent 2, etc., when dealing with an influx of FBI personnel. Or she’ll use old favorites like Tweedle-Dee and Tweedle-Dum.

I didn’t intend it to be that way at first, but Dolores has become as much of a character in the books as any of the people Harmony encounters. She’s developed her own personality and moods, at least in Harmony’s view of things. I wouldn’t go as far as to call her Harmony’s best friend, but she certainly ranks pretty high on the list.

Fun fact- I have a second series of books called the Free Wolves. They are urban fantasy/paranormal romance. In each of the Oak Grove Mysteries, there’s a hidden reference or two to the other books. There’s also a reference to a certain dead musician I’m a fan of.

Last one- although the town of Oak Grove is fictional, I’ve borrowed heavily from my memories of real buildings and houses to “build” it. In fact, the house where Harmony has her apartment is based on the home of one of my favorite aunts. Oak Grove sits somewhere north of Pittsburgh, maybe in Pennsylvania, maybe in Ohio- I never reveal which state it’s in. That gives me a little more freedom when it comes to the law-enforcement types Harmony interacts with on a regular basis.

Blurb:

What starts as Girl’s Night Out ends in murder, and Harmony Duprie is a suspect.

She’s innocent, of course, but with no alibi, the sheriff’s department won’t remove her from the list of suspects. It doesn’t help when a waitress from the bar gets beaten up and the only clue is a slip of paper with Harmony’s name on it. Throw in a rookie deputy dead set on building his reputation and Harmony must tread carefully.

But caution isn’t Harmony’s middle name and she plunges head first into danger to defend her honor.

What she finds is a web of half-truths and suspicions implicating several law enforcement agencies, with Jake, her ex-lover, stuck in the middle of it all.

Can Harmony rescue Jake and find the real culprit before she becomes the next victim?

Author’s Bio:

Born and raised among the rolling hills of western Pennsylvania, P.J. MacLayne still finds inspiration for her books in that landscape. She is a computer geek by day and a writer by night who currently lives in the shadow of the Rocky Mountains. When she’s not in front of a computer screen, she might be found exploring the back roads of the nearby national forests and parks. In addition to the Free Wolves’ stories, she is also the author of the Oak Grove series.

Ten people were taken from my city over the weeken Ten people were taken from my city over the weekend. Ten people who did nothing wrong. The person who took their lives was filled was hate and took it out on innocent people. #BuffaloNY is the City of Good Neighbors. I didn't know those ten people, but I feel their loss like the rest of my city does. We are all neighbors, and we all hurting.

My thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of Aaron Salter, Ruth Whitfield, Pearl Young, Celestine Chaney, Roberta Drury, Heyward Patterson, Margus Morrison, Andre Mackneil, Geraldine Talley, and Katherine Massey; and with the survivors: Zaire Goodman, Jennifer Warrington, and Christopher Braden.

Too bad he’s bringing an old town hangout back to life. And getting everyone involved. And making all of us fall in love with him.
