I Love Romance Novels

June 27, 2014 by Mary

It’s no secret that romance novels are my life. I write them, I read them. I devour as many as I can get my hands on.

But I read an article a few weeks ago about people mocking each other for what they read. I remember when 50 Shades of Grey came out people loved it, but the ones who were against it called it “mommy porn” and said it was trash.

Who cares what you read?

It bugs me when people are judged for what they love. One of my favorite quotes is from a letter Ray Bradbury wrote. The end says:

Be your own self. Love what YOU love! ~Ray Bradbury

I try to live by that quote (even to the point that I intend on getting it tattooed on my wrist at some point). Which is why I could care less if you read romance novels, mysteries, trucker magazines, or children’s books. But for me, romance novels are the only option, or at least my favorite one.

I’m a die hard romantic at heart. Falling in love in real life is hard because of all the uncertainties and doubts. But falling in love in a book takes away all those worries because you know what’s going to happen.

Heartbeats

Romance novels put words to the heartbeats in a love story. I love looking inside a person and hearing their thoughts, seeing their emotions. Romance novels, and all books really, let you know what is truly going on inside a person’s head. It answers the questions you wanted to ask when you were falling in love. You find out what the character is thinking, getting inside their head and feeling the same thing they are.

As hard as it is to fall in love in real life, falling in love in a book is so much better. You get to experience all the good parts, cry through the bad parts, and have it all be over in a few hours.

It’s like watching a great movie, except we all know the book is always better!

Love is what makes life worth living. Without love, life feels empty. Romance novels give you the chance to experience love over and over again.

And remember that each love is different.

When you think about your first love, hopefully you look back on it with fondness, remembering the good times. I hope you feel that way about every past love in your life. I’m sure there are some that ended badly or that weren’t what you thought they were, but none of that bad stuff lingers in a romance novel. Everything is wrapped up into one neat little package.

One package that gives you hope, lets you love, and provides an escape all in one.

I still don’t care what you read. I know what I like and why. I’m assuming if you’re reading this you like romance novels, at least a little bit. But I’m just happy you’re reading!

Why do you love romance novels?

What I Read in 2013

January 10, 2014 by Mary

Love To Read

I read a lot. I’m an author so I guess it’s expected. In 2013 my focus changed dramatically. I went from wanting to be a blogger / speaker / author / etc for working moms to realizing that wasn’t my true passion and changed everything. In all reality I thought (because of books I’d read) that it would be the way to make a decent living until I could write fiction for a living.

Bad plan. In so many ways.

I ended up accepting that it really wasn’t what I wanted to do and I really wasn’t equipped to do it either. So I made the jump to what I wanted to do and started writing contemporary romance novels. And boy has it been fun!

But I wanted to share what I’ve read. If you’re reading this blog, you are a reader. I’m not here to tell you I’m the best and you shouldn’t read anyone else’s work. That would be dumb of me. I’m a huge fan of a bunch of different writers out there and I want you to have some other ideas of great people to follow. So, without further ado… my list from 2013 (organized, I hope)…

Wow, I think I might have a problem! 85 books! Seriously though, there were books I couldn’t finish and books I didn’t like. All the ones here are ones I enjoyed at least somewhat. If you see a series, chances are I really liked it! If you see an author repeated, I enjoyed what I read and wanted more. There are some fabulous authors out there, and there are some horrible ones. But everything on this list offered something that I liked. Oh, and even better, a lot of these books are free!

I hope you’ll check out a few of the books I read in 2013. I think they could be awesome for you to pick up too!

Book Review Champagne and Lemon Drops

August 29, 2013 by Mary

I want to share amazing books with you that I’ve read. If you’re reading this blog, I know you’re a reader. The only books I recommend here are ones I’ve read personally, and the reviews are my own. The author of the book did not have anything to do with this review.

Champagne and Lemon Drops

Champagne and Lemon Drops by Jean Oram is a story about a woman torn between two men and two sides of herself. Beth was content in her life, ready to be married to Oz, her best friend’s brother and man of her dreams as a young woman. Now, as Beth is planning the wedding, Oz is having second thoughts.

Oz decides to take a break from their relationship to evaluate his life. He wants something different than his accountant career and business passed on from his dad, and he wants to find it alone. Beth agrees to give him the space he’s asking for, knowing it’ll only be for a little while.

As the months pass, Beth becomes more upset that Oz seems to be sitting around drinking instead of finding himself and finds comfort in newcomer, Nash, someone who doesn’t have his own personal feelings wrapped up in Beth’s life, and who sees Beth as someone who can do a lot more with her life than be someone’s wife.

Beth finds herself falling for Nash, and wishing Oz the best in his future, even though it doesn’t appear to be with her. She also follows her dreams, chasing the career she wants, finding herself as Oz searches for himself.

In the end, Beth has to decide if her love is enough for Nash, or if it will save Oz. Where does her heart lead her, and which guy is really right for Beth?

I’m not giving away the ending, and I’m not going to tell you what she does. I found the book captivating. The opening chapter is set 13 months in the future, on Beth’s wedding day, but you don’t know who the groom is. Chapter two goes back to the beginning, showing how Oz and Beth drifted apart and how Nash and Beth drifted together.

Beth is a person you want to be friends with. She’s a kind woman, someone you know you could count on. I read the book, feeling like my best friend was going through all this. Beth is not a snotty character, or even one that you want to shake and say ‘you’re being ridiculous.’ No, Beth is someone you want to buy a cup of coffee and ask about her day.

I felt like she never had anyone to talk to. She was lost and confused and continued to get mixed signals and ideas from the people she cared about, and couldn’t ever get a straight answer. She’s a friend I would have loved to chat with to help straighten out her head, and help her realize where her heart lies before anyone got hurt.

In the end, I know Beth did the best thing for her. She finally managed to put it all together and decide what she wanted. I know real life doesn’t always end up that way, but that’s why I love reading. It gives you hope that maybe somewhere things are that simple.

If you want to pick up Champagne and Lemon Drops: A Blueberry Springs Chick Lit Contemporary Romance, it is currently FREE on Amazon! I would have happily paid for this book and I highly recommend you pick up your copy today! Even better news, a sequel will be out Fall 2013!
