Ashleigh’s pulse pounded in her ears, her chest heaving with each breath. She stared at the man she once knew like she knew herself and laughed. “Do you really believe that? Do you really think you’re so different?”
“I didn’t tell you I wanted to go into the Navy, but I never lied about who I was. It killed me to walk away from you.”
“But you did it! You did it and never looked back!”
“Didn’t you hear Williams today? He knew who you were. He saw your picture for years. I kept a photo of us with me for years. You were the reason I stayed alive. You were the way I survived. You, Ashleigh. You might have moved on and married someone else, and I might have been with other women, but you were always the woman I wanted. You were the only one I ever truly loved. And that crazy fucker knows it.”
Ashleigh laughed. She rolled her eyes and shook her head. “A lot of good that did either of us. I married another man who couldn’t be honest with me, and you ended up working for a psycho who now wants us dead.”
“I was honest with you. I loved you more than anything, Ash. I would have walked away if you asked me to. I would have done anything you asked. But you never fucking did. You just told me to get out.”
“Because you would have hated me. You just said it yourself. You would have hated me.”
“Dammit, Ashleigh, you didn’t want me.”
“I still do, you stupid ass. I’ve always wanted you. Why else would I have shown up here? Because of you, Daniel. Because you’re the only one I trust to protect me, even though I know I’ll lose my heart to you all over again.”
Ashleigh realized what she admitted half a second after she said it. She closed her eyes and turned to walk away.
She didn’t get very far.
